A group of researchers discovered a giant insect species that had been invisible for three decades and thought to be extinct.
Last month, a team of scientists and conservation experts undertook an expedition to North Maluku to find the Wallace insect (Megachile pluto), which is the largest insect with a wingspan of about six centimeters.

It took five days in Maluku before researchers managed to find Wallace's giant female bee that lives in an active nest in a tree as high as 2.5 meters.
“It's amazing to see this 'flying bulldog'. Moreover, the insect was thought to be extinct, "said Clay Bolt, conservation expert and natural photographer.
"Seeing how beautiful and huge this species is, also hearing the hum in real life, is simply amazing. My dream now is to use Wallace's insect discovery as a symbol of conservation in Eastern Indonesia, ”he added.
The thumb-sized insect is named after Alfred Russel Wallace, a researcher who contributed to the theory of evolution based on natural selection and the first to discover the giant bee more than a century ago.
Alfred Russel Wallace described it as "a giant insect like a black wasp with enormous jaws like a stag beetle".
The Wallace insect was last seen in 1981, when entomologist Adam Messer described its behavior for the first time. It is known that these giant wasps often settle in termite nests, then use their mandibles to collect tree resin and coat their 'dwellings' as an anti-wing barrier.
The research team said the rediscovery of Wallace's insects provides hope that the world's forests may contain more specimens of this rare species. Or, there are various other species that may be hiding in remote areas of the world.
"In the midst of a decline in the number of global species, it is very exciting to find endangered animals that apparently still survive," said Simon Robson, one of the researchers involved in the expedition.

Even so, there are several things that threaten the habitat of these giant insects. According to Global Forest Watch data, 15% of Indonesia's forest area has been lost due to the conversion of agricultural land from 2001 to 2017.
Recent research also reveals that insects in the world are threatened with extinction. Analysis published in Biological Conservation, states, 40% of the world's insect population will face extinction in the coming decades. As a result, it will change the Earth's ecosystem and affect other animals (also humans) that depend on it.
