According to a study published in the journal Scientific Reports, when a person's flame of consciousness fades during the last hours of life, they continue to process sound in the same way when they were healthy.
These findings suggest that the words spoken to those we love when they are dying, may still be heard and can help comfort them before they leave the world.

The researchers used electroencephalography (EEG) to monitor the brain activity of patients who were unconscious and were at the end of their lives in a Vancouver hospital. They then compared the EEG readings from other patients who were conscious and healthy.
Each group plays various notes in a repeating pattern, but not following the general trend. Researchers are looking for specific brain signals — known as MMN, P3a, and P3b signals — that are known to appear in the brain when noticing abnormal sounds.
Reporting their findings, the investigators said that most of the unconscious patients showed a P3a or P3b response.
"Thus, their auditory system responds in the same way as young and healthy people, even at the end of life," said the researcher.
However, however, although these dying people may still be able to recognize certain sounds before death, it is not clear whether they can understand the words or the meaning.

In a statement, Elizabeth Blundon, the study leader, explained that participants' brains "respond to auditory stimuli, but it is impossible for us to know whether they are able to remember, identify sounds, or understand language".
Beyond that, Romayne Gallagher, deputy research leader, emphasized that at least nurses and hospital doctors pay attention to the fact that the voice of loved ones can comfort patients when they are dying.
“For me, the results of this study add to the significance of the last days and hours of life — that being in person or calling on the phone is important for those who are sick. It's really comfortable to say goodbye and express love directly, "he concluded.
